The Korean Airlines Flight 007 was flying from New York Kennedy Airport to Gimpo Airport, Seoul, South Korea. The Boeing 747 was shot down by a Soviet Su-15TM fighter on Sept. 1, 1983, near Sakhalin Island, killing 269 passengers and crew on board. The South Korea and U.S. governments said that it strayed into the airspace of the Soviet Union because of a pilot error in configuring the air navigation system.
