The Tu-154 plane was in a flying from Tel Aviv, Israel to Novosibirsk, Russia and crashed over the Black Sea on Oct. 4, 2001, killing 78 people on board including 66 passengers and 12 crew. According to the report, it was hit by a S-200 surface to air missile fired by the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian government denied it at first, before finally admitted to the incident. The then president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims and the government paid US$15 million compensation to the victim relatives.
