The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, a double-deck road and rail bridge, is the first bridge built across the Yangtze River. Its construction began in 1955 and was completed in 1957. Extending for 1.6 kilometers, the bridge starts from Turtle Hill in Hanyang on the northern bank of the river, and ends at Snake Hill in Wuchang on the southern bank.
The upper level of the bridge is a two-way, four-lane automobile highway, with pavements on both sides; the lower level is a double-track railway on the Beijing-Guangzhou railway line. It has 8 abutments and 9 arches, which allows for traffic of 10,000 tons and above. As a milestone in China's bridge history, the overpass has become a famous tourist attraction in Wuhan.
