Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is located in Glasgow, Scotland. It is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities.
The university was a major center of the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century, and from the 19th century, it became a pioneer in British higher education by providing the education to satisfy the needs of students from the growing urban and commercial classes, as opposed to the upper class.
Glasgow now has departments of law, medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry. Currently, it is a member of the Russell Group and of Universitas 21. Alumni of the University include six Nobel laureates and two British Prime Ministers.
