Wuhan University (WHU), now located in the capital city of Hubei Province, is widely recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country. Its history dates back to 1893, when it was founded as Ziqiang Institute by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces in the late Qing Dynasty (1645-1911). In 2000, a new WHU was created through a merger between the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University. The university is also famous for its elegant historical buildings and picturesque campus. The cherry blossoms during springtime are an especially lovely site.
