Up at the North Pole, Arthur (James McAvoy), one of Santa's two sons, works in the mail room carefully reading and responding to letters from children all over the world. What Arthur lacks in charisma and leadership, he more than makes up for in Christmas spirit. His brother Steve (Hugh Laurie), on the other hand, is quite the polar opposite.
Steve runs the show for Santa in the manner of a high ranking military officer. Steve's high tech Christmas Eve procedures are carried out with precision by the hundreds of elves who report to him. When Santa (Jim Broadbent) takes off in his sleigh, er, airship, Steve runs operations on the ground in his elaborate and well-staffed mission control center. Nothing ever goes wrong. That is, until something does.
Somehow, on this, Santa's 70th year of being the big man (and what Steve hopes will be Santa's last so he himself can assume the throne), one child is missed. Steve determines it is impossible to fix the minute error -- it's only one in billions, you know. But Arthur is appalled.
With a little help from Grandsanta (Bill Nighy), Bryony (Ashley Jensen) the gift-wrapping elf and the reindeer, Arthur determines to put things right. Can an old man stuck in the ways of the past and a clumsy, misunderstood Arthur ever hope to accomplish such a task? Only time will tell, but unfortunately, they don't have any time to lose.
