Regina Spektor is a petite woman with striking red hair and bright lipstick. She writes about what's on her mind, and her music often defies explanation. But she says that doesn't concern her. |
"If I could explain every word of this song, then I wouldn't have been very inspired when I wrote it. I would have been more crafty and intellectual," she says. "I would really hate it if I could call up Kafka or Hemingway or Salinger and any question I could throw at them they would have an answer. That's the magic when you read or hear something wonderful — there's no one that has all the answers." |
Spektor is a Russian Jew who fled the anti-Semitism of the Soviet Union with her parents and immigrated to the Bronx when she was nine. Spektor studied classical piano at the SUNY Purchase Music Conservatory, where she was also exposed to jazz and blues. |
By the time she was 20, Spektor was playing small clubs in and around New York. At the shows, she'd sold copies of her homemade CDs 11:11 and Songs. By 2003, she'd landed a record deal with Sire, and her self-released album Soviet Kitsch was reissued by the label. |
Spektor's tantalizing piano playing and her quirky character pieces helped land her widespread exposure, particularly after the 2006 release of Begin to Hope. Buoyed by the hit song "Fidelity," the album was critically acclaimed and helped cement Spektor's place as a pop-music phenomenon. |
As a fiercely independent and idiosyncratic singer/songwriter who plays the piano, Regina Spektor draws easy comparisons to Tori Amos. But her work feels less remote and more versatile, thanks in large part to a singular songwriting voice that spans genres and personas with grace and apparent ease. |
