Snowden seeks asylum in Iceland

The Icelandic government confirmed that it has received an informal approach from a middleman who alleged that whistleblower Edward Snowden wants to seek asylum in the country.

Wikileaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson told Reuters that he had been approached by Snowden on June 12. Snowden asked Hrafnsson to seek asylum in Iceland on his behalf.
Snowden has expressed an interest in seeking asylum in Iceland in past interviews. When asked, during an online chat with The Guardian Monday, why he did not fly directly to Iceland, Snowden said: "Iceland could be pushed harder, quicker, before the public could have a chance to make their feelings known, and I would not put that past the current U.S. administration."
Russia and Ecuador have previously said they would extend asylum to Snowden.
