Combined naval maneuvering exercises between the United States and South Korea are underway off the west coast of the Korean peninsula.
The US aircraft carrier George Washington is showcasing its capability of conducting operations away from home by demonstrating the launch and recovery of aircraft such as F-18 jet fighters and E-2 Hawk-eye. The demonstration, on the second day of the drill, was part of a tactical exercise, aimed at testing the US Navy's ability to operate alongside its South Korean counterpart.
Approximately 8,000 South Korean and US military personnel are taking part in the exercises, of whom 5,000 are on board the George Washington. The program coincides with the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War.
