This week marks the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China at the height of the cold war. The presence of Nixon in Beijing had changed the world. Due to the sensational ping-pang diplomacy, the two governments quickly decided to end over two decades of rivalry and to take on the former Soviet Union as their common enemy. But with the end of the Cold War, America started to look for new strategic rivals to keep its military industrial complex alive and to sustain its global leadership. The rise of Asia along with the ascendance of China as the second biggest economy help transform the US national security strategy and prompt its pivot towards Asia after beating a retreat from Iraq and Afghanistan.
