While visiting family in the south of the Chinese province of Sichuan, Michael Mais and his wife discussed the situation of farmers living in remote mountain areas without road access. Local people grew delicious apples but didn't plant many trees as it was difficult to market their surplus produce.
Michael realised that people in the Alps use simple cable-cars to transport supplies and agricultural products to and from remote farms, and this technology could be applied in China as well.
