The IAAF’s awards for the year’s top track and field performances are being announced, and one winner is a familiar one. Usain Bolt won the male Athlete of the Year award despite losing his hold on the 100 meters, athletics’ most prestigious event. On the women’s side, Australian Sally Pearson clinched her first trophy for a nearly flawless season in the 100 hurdles.
The 25 year-old Bolt walked home with the trophy for the third time. A false start knocked him out of the 100 in the World Championships, but he came back to claim the 200 and took a relay gold.
Bolt said on the ceremony: "This award really means a lot. This year I really worked hard and pushed through all the hard training. To my coach, who is the greatest ever that I call a genius, he really made a specific plan for me this season because I had to work really hard. I really give thanks to my coach Glen Mills because he’s really helped me and I know Yohan would agree that he really helped us through a rough season."
