Japan begins to build a new generation helicopter carrier by 2012. With 248 meters in length and a 24,000 ton displacement, the new carrier will be able to service 14 helicopters. The "22DDH Plan" is due to be completed by 2014 at a cost of about 1 billion US dollars.
The new generation carrier will be equipped with the "Hai Lamu" air defense system, which marks the first time the "Hai Lamu" system will be installed on a non-US navy vessel.
The "22DDH" will be given heavy-duty lifting capacity which can lift not only helicopters, but also warplanes like the F-35B.
