One of Tibet's grandest festivals has kicked off in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Shoton festival is part of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage with a history of over one-thousand years.
Shoton is Tibetan for yoghurt banquet. Originally a religious activity, it was a time when Buddhist pilgrims gave yoghurt to nuns and monks after they had their summer retreat. Thangka paintings depicting Tibetan opera and horse racing are to be presented during the festivities.
