"The Girl from Dabancheng" and "Lift Your Veil", are two popular folk songs in western China. They both were created by Wang Luobin, who is hailed as "The Pop King of China's West". Wang was born in Beijing, but took up residence for more than 50 years in Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. That's why a celebration of his birth was held in Urumchi for the late artist where he drew many of the themes for his songs.
Art troupes and students were among the performers to celebrate the 97th birthday of the late pop singer and songwriter. Nine year old Ma Xiaoqi, sang "Flowers and Youth", a well-known song by Wang.
Chronicling the celebration was the establishment of "Wang Luobin Art Ensemble", chaired by Wang Haicheng, son of the late artist.
Wang Haicheng, Son of Wang Luobin, said, "I'm so excited. I didn't think the society could give us so much support. I feel a responsibility to come out and participate in the activities."
Wang Luobin, who was born in 1913 and died in 1996, devoted his life to composing, collecting and revising thousands of Xinjiang inspired Chinese folk songs. Wang also composed seven operas.
Bao Yingren, Xingjiang Art Assoc., said, "Wang Luobin composed many popular songs all of which I like very much. I've dedicated myself to singing and passing on his songs. He contributed greatly to the pop music of our region and is responsible for promoting our music to China as well as to the rest of the world."
Under the endeavor of "The Art Troupe of King of Pop of Western China", a musical entitled "Youthful Dance Tune", based on the life and career of the artist, will be on stage soon. Also in rehearsal, is a concert "In that Place Wholly Faraway" named after one of Wang's most popular hits.
