China has set a goal to build a nationwide digital library system within five years. Centering on the digital database of China National Library, the digital system will connect libraries of provinces, counties, towns and villages.
Via the internet, mobile nets, broadcasting systems and satellites, the digital library will connect library resources of all sizes, all around the country to China National Library.
All documents, manuscripts and information, as long as they are allowed by the copyright's spectrum, will be included in the database. It will be shared by any terminal of the digital library system. Besides those across the country who will benefit, the huge network will become a platform to showcase the country's culture and serve for international exchanges.
In five years time, the database will encompass messages that equal the volume of 2.6 billion books. That means, readers in a countryside library or a library of a local community, as long as they are within the system, will enjoy this huge base of knowledge with the simple click of a mouse.
