The volcanic activity underway at Iceland's fifth largest glacier continues, raising fears it could trigger a more powerful eruption in a nearby volcano.
There was some concern that the fissure appeared to be growing, and that the spreading eruption had apparently evaporated a miniature glacier on the edge of the main ice sheet.
Scientists were flying over southern Iceland Monday to evaluate whether it was safe for people to return to their homes.
About 500 people who live in the rural area near the site were evacuated, but then allowed to their homes. Scientists said further volcanic activity is possible.
