China and the US are expected to further strengthen cooperation on energy and environmental protection during US President Barack Obama's China visit from November 15th to 18th.

The US Carnegie Endowment for International Peace also says enhancing cooperation in these two areas will be one of the major achievements of Obama's trip.

Carnegie Endowment For International Peace senior associate Taiya Smith says as the Copenhagen climate conference approaches, special attention is being paid to progress on Sino-US cooperation on energy and environmental protection. Cooperation in these two areas is closely related to the trend of the Sino-US strategic cooperative relations.

Smith says both China and the US are major consumers of greenhouse gas. The two countries also have huge market potentials in clean energy and environmental protection.

China could become a major producer for clean energy and environmentally-friendly products while the US can provide innovative technologies.

Taiya Smith, Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for Intenational Peace, said, "As long as China and the US take actions to reduce carbon emission, climate change will make progress."

Smith also says the two countries have reached agreements on electric cars, carbon capture and storage. The key is how to put them into effect. She is also urging the two sides to increase policy and financial support to private-owned firms and academic institutions in related industries.
