Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday called for greater cooperation in environnment protection.
Switzerland was successful in dealing with environment and climate issues "because the vast majority of our population is convinced of the necessity of sustainable use of resources and takes an active part in it," Leuthard said at the National Day for the Swiss Confederation at the Shanghai Expo.
The pavilion showcased Switerland's successful environment-friendly approaches to air and water quality, mobility, bio-diversity, transport network, sustainable use of forests, thermal treatment of waste, constant monitoring of air quality and recycling of glass and aluminum, she said.
"With Switzerland's case, we wish to showcase adequate, innovative and sustainable Swiss solutions and we also wish to learn from each other's experience in order to pursue a better quality of life and a more sustainable future for all of us," she said.
Leuthard called for global cooperation on environmental issues. "Climate and environment protection doesn't end at a country's boundaries. Global cooperation is important because we all have to take care of this world. There is only one earth."
Leuthard said she was very pleased with the "advancing" cooperation between China and Switzerland on issues of environment protection.
