 Former Residence of Lao She

Lao She (1899-1966) was a noted Chinese writer. A novelist and dramatist, he was one of the most significant figures of 20th century Chinese literature, and is perhaps best known for his novel Camel Xiangzi or Rickshaw Boy and the play Teahouse. He was of Manchu ethnicity.

This Residence was bought in 1950 after Lao She moved back from the United States. He spent the last 16 years of his life in the residence. It is at 19, Fengfu Hutong, West Dengshikou Street. It is located in somewhere between the Forbidden City and Wangfujing. In the spring of 1954, Lao She planted two persimmon trees; and in every fall, many persimmons are hung on the trees. Therefore, the residence got a nickname from Lao She's wife (Miss. Hu Jieqing). It was called "Red Persimmon Courtyard".

Many works of Lao She were composed in this residence. In February, 1999, the residence was opened up as an exhibition of Mr. Lao She's life. The residence is kept as what is look like when Mr. Lao She was alive.
