Built in 1679, Songzanlin Monastery, also known as the "Little Potala Palace," is the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan province. From the monastery's front gate, it is just a short walk up to the observation platform, which offers splendid views of the monastery complex and surrounding hills.

After exploring the monastery, you can have authentic Tibetan beef hotpot or try the unique flavors of ghee and milk curd, alongside fluffy steamed pancakes in Dukezong Ancient Town. As night falls, you can stroll through the ancient stone alleyways and enjoy the captivating scenes of this 1,300-year-old town featuring traditional Tibetan homes and ancient pagodas.
You should also remember to set aside at least one full day to tour Balagezong Snow Mountain, as the steep, winding mountain roads require additional travel time. The breathtaking beauty of Balagezong stems from its dramatic elevation, rising from 2,000 meters to 5,545 meters, which creates diverse climates and landscapes. For safety reasons, private vehicles are not allowed in the mountainous areas, however, shuttle buses operated by the scenic spot with experienced drivers are on hand to take you to the mountaintop. Be prepared for potential altitude sickness during the ascent, and consider carrying portable oxygen cylinders or motion sickness medication.
Reflecting on my journey through Shangri-La, I am filled with a sense of peace. With its stunning natural beauty and friendly local people, the city is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, and is now just a short high-speed train ride away.
