This Transboundary Biosphere Reserve "Trifinio Fraternidad" was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in June, 2011. It's the first Transboundary Biosphere Reserve in the American continent, and counts with an extention of 1,500 kilometers square, spanning over eight municipalities in El Salvador, two in Guatemala and two other in Honduras. On every June 5, the "World Environment Day" is celebrated worldwide, which was established by the United Nations (UN) in order to create awareness and sensitize the public opinion in relation to environmental themes, according to local press.
