"Chungking Express" (1994)
"Chungking Express," by the grandmaster of the Hong Kong film industry Wong Kar-wai, is a two-part film about two melancholy Hong Kong policemen. The first one, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years, falls for a mysterious female underworld figure. Meanwhile, the other cop, who breaks up with his flight attendant girlfriend, meets a beautiful and ethereal waitress at a late-night restaurant he frequents.
The cast is star-studded, including Takeshi Kaneshiro, Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung, and pop diva Faye Wong. The movie is the eternal classic about lost love. It is poetic, beautiful and haunting. Moreover, it features plenty of iconic dialogue and monologues.
"Love is the most wonderful and ultimate puzzle, and its life span is hidden in the movie. As the old poetry said, 'You cannot know the true face of Lushan Mountain / Because you are in the mountain's midst .'How you 'cannot know' is also kind of romantic," Wong said.
