6. "A Simple Life" (2011)
The legendary Hong Kong director Ann Hui did a beautiful job of making "A Simple Life," a tender, emotional, and thought-provoking work focusing on the elderly. The simple story depicts the last two years of the life of a maid who has served a Hong Kong family for 60 years. After she suffers a stroke, the son of the family she works for takes on the responsibility of caring for the woman who has cared for him since he was a baby. As the plot unfolds, the beauty of the simple kindness between two ordinary people brings comfort and warmth to the audience. It is one of the most successful art-house films at the box office while inspiring China's filmmaking in this genre. Also, the two leading actors, Andy Lau and Deanie Ip, give the best performances of their careers.
