# New record: "Chinese artificial sun"
In May, China's Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), or the "Chinese artificial sun," set a new record by achieving a plasma temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds and realizing a plasma temperature of 160 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds.
EAST, located at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP), aims to mimic the nuclear fusion process of the sun, using deuterium found in the sea to provide clean energy.
The breakthrough is a significant step toward the testing of a fusion reactor.
