2020 marked the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Copyright Law of the People's Republic of China. Many laws have since been promulgated and amended to further improve the copyright legal system.
On May 28, 2020, at the third session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), Chinese lawmakers voted to adopt the Civil Code, which provides an important system basis for strengthening intellectual property work.
On Nov. 11, 2020, the 23rd meeting of the 13th NPC Standing Committee voted and passed the decision to amend the Copyright Law, which improved the concepts and systems related to copyrighted works and their rights, increased penalties for infringements, and expanded enforcement methods for copyright authorities.
On Dec. 26, 2020, the 24th meeting of the 13th NPC Standing Committee voted to pass the "Criminal Law Amendment (XI)," which increased the statutory penalty terms for crimes of copyright infringement and magnified the crackdown on copyright infringement.
