China has entered the "era of longevity," with the number of people aged 90+ doubling in the past 10 years.
The latest population census shows that most centenarians live near the water in south China. This indicates that human's life expectancy is closely related to the natural environment and climate. Areas with mild weather, abundant rainfall and plenty of sun and less pollutants are better for people's health.
Experts say good sleep, less exposure to illness, a positive attitude and a diet of light food are the main features of centenarians.
According to experts of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, south China's Hainan Province is a gathering place of people with longer life expectancy. There are now 1,371 centenarians living in the province, whose longevity index is 29.46, top in the country.
The longevity index is defined as a ratio of the number of individuals aged above 90 vs the number of people aged above 65, expressed per mil (‰). It is used to reflect the longevity level in an area.
