Forbes magazine recently released its list of the highest-paid female athletes of 2014. The income figures cover the period from June 2013 to June 2014 and include prize money, salary, licensing fees, appearances and endorsements.
Not surprisingly, most of the richest female athletes are tennis players, because tennis is the one major money-generating sport where men and women have attained near equality in terms of prize money and sponsorship opportunities.
The 10 highest-paid female athletes represent eight different nationalities. Most of these athletes earn the bulk of their total earnings from endorsements. These ten women collectively earned a total of US$142 million, down 3% from last year.
