Located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, the Eiffel Tower is the most famous landmark in France. It is the tallest structure in Paris and the most visited paid monument in the world, attracting nearly 7 million visitors in 2011. It is difficult to connect this romantic dating attraction with suicide. However, ever since a 23-year-old young man committed the first suicide at the Eiffel Tower by hanging himself there in 1898, more and more people have chosen to end their lives there. Jumping off of the tower is the third most popular means of suicide in France, preceded only by poison and hanging.
