According to the average housing prices of Chinese cities in 2013, released by the national real estate market information center, there was one city with an average housing price of more than 30,000 yuan (US$4,962.03) per square meter, six cities with a price of more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,308.03) and 18 cities with a price of more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,654.08).
With its incessantly high housing prices, Beijing, the country's political, cultural and economic center, stood out as the most expensive city to live in the past year. Its average property price reached up to 36,373 yuan (US$6,016.32) per square meter. Shanghai ranked second, followed by Shenzhen.
