Upon her graduation from the Central University of Finance and Economics in 1988, Liu Yang joined CITIC Group in Beijing jumpstarting her career as an investor. In 1993, Liu was sent by CITIC to Australia to be the CIO and fund manager of the CMG CH China Fund (later renamed as New Era PRC Fund).
In 2001, Liu joined the First State Investment Management (HK) and one year later she moved to Atlantis Investment. In 2003, when the SARS outbreak scared away fund managers and drove down the stock market, Liu bottom-fished and later cashed in on a stunning 93 percent return rate, which established her name nationwide. Last year, she bought all Atlantis shares and managed to obtain more than US$4 billion in total assets. In November of this year, Liu was included in Fortune's 2012 Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business, ranking 48th globally.
