Liu Jinrong 劉進(jìn)榮
Liu Jinrong, formerly a PLA scout who attended China's counterattack against Vietnam in 1979, once proclaimed himself to be the No. 1 killer in Hainan Province. Liu retired from the army in 1980s and afterwards became a wanted criminal for taking lives during a conflict.
Later on, Liu fled deep into the mountains of Dongfang and Changjiang counties, where he set up his own little "Oriental Underworld" by gathering dozens of fugitives, scoundrels and rascals to confront local police forces. The crime group killed a total of 13, injured 38, and robbed people of more than 100,000 yuan (US$17,400).
Liu fielded his private armed forces with illegal yet standard military equipment including guns, hand grenades, walkie-talkies, telescopes and jeeps. Two local police scouts were killed by Liu's men during a crackdown. On Feb. 23, 1993, Liu was shot dead in a shootout.
