It was founded in 1907 by Erich Paulun, a German physician in Shanghai. The university was also one of the earliest to include engineering into its programs. It was given its present name and became a national university in 1927. Presently, Tongji enjoys about 30 state and provincial-level key laboratories and engineering research centers. It offers 74 undergraduate programs, 263 masters' programs and 144 doctoral programs in 29 academic schools on four campuses. It also has 19 post-doctoral mobile stations.
