Shanghai Museum, founded in 1952, is a museum of ancient Chinese art. Located in the center of Shanghai, in People's Square, the museum totals 39,200 sm of total area with 2,800 sm of exhibition space.

The museum's collection features over 120,000 precious works of art, including bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, sculpture, jade, seals and ancient coins. Works are shown in eleven permanent galleries and three special temporary exhibition halls.

The vase was made in Guan Ware (official ware) during the reign of the Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1911). It is the only one existent olive vase made using Fencai skill during that period. Fencai is a kind of coloring skill for porcelain which was invented during the Emperor Kangxi's reign and developed in the following Qing Dynasty. In 2002, the vase was auctioned for 41.5 million Hong Kong dollars (US$5.35 million), marking the highest price for Qing Dynasty porcelain at the time.
