The struggles of German champions Bayer Leverkusen appear to be over. With seven consecutive unbeaten games in the Bundesliga, Xabi Alonso's side is firmly back in the title race.
"We're doing well in the role of the hunters," said team captain Lukas Hradecky, following a 2-0 victory over Augsburg that added to crucial wins in the German Cup and UEFA Champions League. The Finnish goalkeeper described the performance as "a clear signal" of the team's resurgence, though he avoided directly naming title rivals Bayern Munich.

"Last season, we were the hunted. Now it's time to embrace this new role," Hradecky said. "In November, we seemed to realize what it takes to get back to success."
Leverkusen's victory reduced Bayern's lead at the top of the table to just four points after 14 matches, reopening the door to their goal of defending last season's league title.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes credited the team's renewed momentum to their rediscovered rhythm and determination. "The pressure we're putting on competitors is showing results," Rolfes said. "We've regained confidence and are displaying our immense quality."
The team's current form contrasts with Bayern's recent struggles, including a slip-up in Mainz and premature declarations by board member Uli Hoeness regarding the league title.
Alonso praised his team's maturity and resilience, noting they've moved on from the euphoria of last season's success. "We've shifted focus to new goals and challenges," said the Spanish coach.
Leverkusen is also thriving on the European stage. With 13 points in the Champions League group stage, the best of any German club, they've found additional motivation. "The pressure could cause our competitors to drop points," Rolfes said. "It's on us to capitalize on those moments and unleash our potential, regardless of what others do."
Captain Granit Xhaka echoed the optimism, emphasizing the team's dominance on the road. "The way we're playing now reflects the style of a top side," said the Switzerland international, who helped lead Leverkusen to last season's double.
Rolfes highlighted the team's mental strength and development, confident in their ability to replicate last season's league and cup triumphs. "We're back to focusing solely on our performance and improving game by game. We've found our rhythm," he said.
Rumors of Alonso departing for Real Madrid next summer add intrigue to Leverkusen's campaign. A repeat of their domestic success would be the ultimate farewell gift for their coach, solidifying his legacy before his potential move to Spain.
