The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) mourned the passing of 19-year-old Italian athlete Matilde Lorenzi, who died after being seriously injured during a training.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi. FIS joins FISI President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning, including coaches, athletes, teammates, the federal council, and all FISI staff," FIS said in its statement on Tuesday.
Lorenzi fell and crashed onto the hard piste on the Schnalstal Glacier in Tyrol, Italy, on Monday. She was flown by a helicopter to the hospital immediately, but failed to survive the serious injuries and died one day later.
Lorenzi is one of Italy's rising talents as she finished sixth in the downhill and eighth in Super-G at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in France in February.
