Dominique Jones had 25 points and 12 assists to help the Xinjiang Flying Tigers beat the Shenzhen Aviators 104-91 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win in the 2023-2024 season of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league.
Shenzhen was ahead 30-29 after the first quarter. But midway the second quarter, Travis Trice led an 8-0 run for Xinjiang, who overtook and built a 12-point lead.
Shenzhen got back within single digits in the third period before Xinjiang led 82-74 into the fourth quarter.
For a moment it looked as if Shenzhen could turn the game around when He Xining finished a jump shot to cut the deficit to four points with two minutes and 57 seconds to go.
But then Jones hit a three-pointer, produced a layup in the next possession, smashing Shenzhen's hopes.
"We had good defense and grabbed more rebounds, that's why we sealed the victory," said Qiu Biao, head coach of Xinjiang.
"I felt friendly when I visited here, I saw my retired jersey and old friends," Qiu added.
The Zhejiang Lions secured their fourth consecutive win of the season after thrashing the Jiangsu Dragons 102-81.
Sun Minghui scored a game-high 33 points for Zhejiang, and Derrick Walton added 18 points. In the Jiangsu side, Alpha Kaba had a team-high 28 points and 13 rebounds.
Elsewhere, the Shanghai Sharks overpowered the Jilin Northeast Tigers 116-107, and the Qingdao Eagles tamed the Ningbo Rockets 101-94.
