Li's victory means China has two representives in the last 16 of this season's first Grand Slam tournament after countrywoman Zheng Jie upset 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli of France 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
"It's a good sign for Chinese tennis," said Li.
Li's previous best performance in Grand Slam tournaments were quarterfinalists in Wimbledon Open in 2006 and the US Open last year.
