It has been confirmed that the sensational reports of security breaches at a handful of well-known Chinese Internet companies are simply rumors, Xinhua reported.
China Internet Network Information Center dismissed the recent rumors surrounding the mass leaking of passwords, stating that the rumors had no basis in fact.
Companies caught up in the rumors, including 360Buy, ICBC, Weibo, all denied any breach in security protocols, while CSDN and Tianya, where the rumors were reportedly originally centered on, said that the last attacks on their data occurred two years ago.
Police investigating the so called "users' information leakage" have discovered nine cases involving attempted data hacking, and three cases of malicious rumor-mongering. The cases have resulted in a total of four suspects being remanded in custody and a further eight currently being punished for disturbing public security.
The police have confirmed that further investigations into the case are ongoing, but have warned the public to safeguard sensitive information while surfing the Internet.
