Movie goers are not as active as last year during this Spring Festival with tickets sales down. Valentines' Day is always thought to be a good chance to promote the movie market. Many cinemas hope new movies shown during the special day will bring good luck.
Three new movies have made their debut since Saturday, just before Valentine's Day.
The film, Cherish Our Love Forever, holds a large portion of the audience. It is the film adaptation of a popular TV series from more than ten years ago. With the same actors as the series, and several famous singers joining, the movie is expected to bring in a young crowd.
The Tourist is another eye-catching movie as it's performed by two big Hollywood stars, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.
However, cinemas worry the market won't surpass last year because Valentines' Day is on a weekday.
Li Lan, Vice manager of Yonghua Cinema, said, "Because of the date, the tickets won't sell as well as last year. But the movies are good, so it should be better than during the Spring Festival."
Meanwhile, the Green Hornet will also be shown on the Valentines' Day. Cinemas say the film has already been drawing in big crowds and is expected to keep doing so.
Wang Baozheng, CEO of Shanghai Heping Cinema, said, "The story in the film is not a new one, it's been done before in movies like Spiderman and 007. We also provide the audience with the 3D version and IMAX 3D version, which has helped its ticket sales."
At the same time, cinemas also say 3D films are not as big of an attraction for audiences as last year. So a good plot is even more important.
