Minimum wages raised in 12 Chinese provinces and cities
A total of 12 provinces and municipalities in China raised their standards for the minimum monthly salary on April 1, Legal Evening News reported.
Zhejiang Province raised its standard to 1,310 yuan from 1,100 yuan, while Guangdong sets its standard at 1,300 yuan, both overtaking long time leader Shanghai (1280 yuan) as the provinces in China with highest minimum wage.
Of all the listed provinces, eight are from the east, reflecting the eastern provinces' intention to attract more workers for their labor-intensive industries such as textile and manufacturing.
Chongqing Municipality registered a rate hike of 27.9 percent, which tops the list in terms of growth, while Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region sits at second place with a 26.8 percent increase, both indicating the western region's strong desire to keep their local workforce from leaving for jobs in other regions.
