Thailand backs the extension of Kyoto Protocol in the empty of new round of legally binding pledge, Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suwit Khunkitti said Tuesday.

He said countries from G-77 and China share the same opinion on this issue.

"We want to extend the protocol because the second commitment is uncertain," he said.

"If we still cannot reach new agreement or mechanism, we should prolong the Kyoto Protocol because it takes so much time to start a new commitment," Suwit told reporters during press briefing.

Most developed nations agree to legally binding to the Kyoto Protocol which they signed in 1997 for the purpose of curbing greenhouse gas emissions. The commitments under the protocol are due to expire at the end of 2012 but there have been no new pledges to replace yet.

Moreover, the minister also said Thailand prefers multilateral negotiation over bilateral one or Thailand would utilize the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC) as its important mechanism to push forward mitigating steps.

"I am afraid that problems may occur if we resort to bilateral framework instead of multilateral one," Suwit said.
