World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, June 17, was proclaimed by the General Assembly in 1994. It aims to devote the World Day to promoting awareness of the need for international co-operation to combat desertification and the effects of drought, and on the implementation of the Convention to Combat Desertification.

Desertification, land degradation and drought threaten human security by depriving people of their means of life by taking away food, access to water, the means for economic activities, and even their homes.
In China, the worst drought in a century has lingered in over five provinces in Southwest China since September 2009, affecting more than 50 million people and leaving almost 20 million people and millions of livestock short of drinking water.
