Sudan Could Calm Down Situation in Darfur

Visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail said on Monday that the Sudanese government could calm down the situation in the western region of Darfur soon.

Speaking to reporters, Ismail said the United Nations wanted Sudan to achieve tangible progress in security in a short period of time, and the Sudanese government would be able to do it.

He expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo on Sunday, saying the Arab League and the African Union agreed that there was no genocide in Darfur.

On July 30, the United Nations Security Council adopted a solution, giving Sudan 30 days to disarm the Arab militia, known as the Janjaweed, which was blamed for atrocities in Darfur, or face international sanctions.

Rebel groups in Darfur took up arms against the government in February last year due to what they claimed that their region was neglected by the successive Sudanese governments.

Darfur is considered by the United Nations the site of the world's worst humanitarian crisis, which has left up to 10,000 people dead and some 1 million displaced.
