Huang Xingguo was on Monday elected mayor of Tianjin, and Liu Shengyu was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress, the city's top legislative body.

The elections took place at the first session of the 15th Tianjin Municipal People's Congress.

Huang, 53 and a native of Xiangshan, in east China's Zhejiang Province, began his career in November 1972. He formerly served in a host of official posts including deputy Communist Party secretary of Xiangshan County, Party boss of Taizhou City in Zhejiang, deputy governor of Zhejiang, as well as Party boss of Ningbo, a port city in Zhejiang.

Huang was appointed deputy secretary of Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in November 2003 and was elected vice mayor of Tianjin in December 2003.

Delegates to the meeting also elected Li Shaoping as president of the Higher People's Court of Tianjin City.

Feng Guoqin, a native of Shanghai City, was elected as chairman of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Monday.

Feng, 59, who used to work in the teaching profession and serve as a Communist Party chief of a middle school in Shanghai, began to serve as vice mayor of Shanghai beginning October 1996.
