Mayor of Chongqing Municipality

Wang Hongju, a native from the Yuzhong District, Chongqing, was born in October 1945. He began work in September 1968, and joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in February 1979.

Wang graduated from the Mathematics Department of Sichuan University in September 1968. In October the same year, he worked at Pengshui Heavy Spar Mine in Chongqing and later served as section chief of the mine. In October 1974, he held the post of section chief for the Yujiang Bridge Project in Pengshui County. In October 1976 he served as an officer for the Industry and Transportation Department of Pengshui County.

In February 1979, he served as officer and deputy director for the Office of Pengshui County Party Committee. In February 1983, he became a standing committee member of the CPC Pengshui County Committee and director of the Committee's office. In September 1983, he served as secretary for CPC Pengshui County Committee.

In February 1985, he became deputy secretary of the CPC Fuling Prefectural Committee in Sichuan, and concurrently served the post as secretary of the CPC Fuling Municipal Committee since April 1988.

He served as deputy secretary of CPC Fuling Prefectural Committee and commissioner of Fuling Prefecture in February 1990, and as secretary of CPC Fuling Prefectural Committee in July 1994.

In March 1996, he served as secretary of the CPC Fuling Municipal Committee. In September 1996, he served as a standing committee member of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee and secretary of Fuling Municipal Party Committee.

In June 1997, he was elected as deputy secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee and deputy mayor of Chongqing at the first session of the first Chongqing People's Congress.

In October 2002, he served as acting mayor of Chongqing. In January 2003, he was elected as mayor of Chongqing at the first session of the second Chongqing People's Congress.

He is a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee.
