This belief comes from The Book of History. Either a country or an individual must have great ambition and make tireless efforts to achieve success. Without high aims, one cannot travel far, and without effort, one cannot succeed.

In his speech at the Indonesian Congress in October 2013, Xi Jinping used this ancient quotation to indicate the complementary relation of great ambition and hard work. He said: China has the confidence, conditions and capability to realize its goals. It also understands clearly that as the largest developing country, it faces many difficulties and challenges on its road ahead. To bring a good life to all the Chinese people, it has to make long-term, sustained efforts.

功崇惟志，業(yè)廣惟勤

“功崇惟志，業(yè)廣惟勤”，出自《尚書》，大意是取得偉大的功績，在于志向遠(yuǎn)大；完成偉大的事業(yè)，在于工作勤奮。不管是國家要實現(xiàn)振興，還是個人要成就事業(yè)，都必須具備兩個條件，一為立志，二為勤勉。立志是前提，勤勉為保障，無志不足以行遠(yuǎn)，無勤則難以成事。

2013年10月，習(xí)近平在印度尼西亞國會的演講中引用“功崇惟志，業(yè)廣惟勤”，指出中國有信心、有條件、有能力實現(xiàn)自己的奮斗目標(biāo)，同時也清醒地認(rèn)識到，中國仍是世界上最大的發(fā)展中國家，在前進(jìn)道路上仍然面臨不少困難和挑戰(zhàn)，要使全體中國人民都過上美好生活，需要付出長期不懈的努力。他引用這句含義雋永的古語，恰如其分地表明了立志與實干相輔相成的關(guān)系。
