New Asian Security Concept
Addressing the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia held in Shanghai in May 2014, President Xi Jinping introduced an Asian security concept that emphasizes joint and comprehensive measures and cooperation in ensuring lasting security. He proposed creating a regional security cooperation framework under the new concept that aims to carve a path through joint efforts to a secure future in Asia enjoyed by all.
A focus on common security means that the security needs of every country should be respected and duly met. Comprehensive measures should be taken to ensure security in both traditional and non-traditional fields. Cooperation and dialogue are indispensable to strengthening the security of individual countries and of the region as a whole. Lasting security is possible only when security measures are implemented in conjunction with sustained development efforts.
