On May 15, 2007, CNNIC issued the Investigation Report on China's WAP Development 2007 in Beijing. The Report indicates that as of the end of March 2007, there were about 39 million active WAP users in China, and about 65,000 WAP sites with independent domain names, having approximately 260 million WAP web pages and 800GB webpage bytes. China's WAP industry had come to a certain scale.
Among the active 39 million WAP users, about one fourth of them firstly visited the WAP within half a year and nearly a half within one year and three fourths within two years. The mushrooming WAP users indicate that more and more netizens have interest in WAP, which will facilitate the WAP development in a short period.
According to the Report, divided by the province, the netizens in the east accounted for 60.8%, 24.1% in the middle and only 15.1% in the west. The WAP development in the middle and west is obviously lag behind the east. The situation is similar with the development of the conventional Internet and it is closely linked to the fundamental realities of China.
In the regional development, Guangdong Province took the lead with 9.70 million active WAP users, accounting for twenty-five percent of the total WAP users in China. There are 1.70 million active WAP users in Beijing and 1.30 million in Shanghai.
In the frequency of access, the users accessing to WAP frequently per day accounted for 13.8%, and once a day also reached 15.3%, once at least a week 28.3%. The total percentage of the above three kinds accounted for 57.4%, which is to say that there are nearly six tenths of users connecting to the Internet by WAP at least once per week.
The Report also includes the investigation on the netizens' complaints with the connection to the Internet by mobile phones. The three representative complaints are poor band width, higher cost and insufficient contents. Among the investigated netizens, 44.4% of them require to speed up, 29.6% for cutting down cost, 18.3% for reduction of charge trap, and 16.6% for enriching the contents.
It is also mentioned in the Report that there is netizen have limited frequently visited of websites. Over one half of the netizens only visit one certain website frequently and the netizens frequently visiting two certain websites or above account for less 20%.
