Famous Chinese Writer Commemorated

East China's Zhejiang Province, hometown of late Chinese literature giant Mao Dun, held various kinds of activities Tuesday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death.

More than 100 scholars and experts from Singapore, France, Japan and China attended the Seventh Mao Dun International Symposium, which received over 60 papers on Mao Dun's literary achievements and his status and role in China's modern literature.

In addition, film shows, painting exhibitions and seminars opened Tuesday and will last through the end of this month.

Mao Dun, born on July 4, 1896, spent his childhood in Wuzhen, Tongxiang. In the 1930s, he organized the Left-Wing Writers League in conjunction with Lu Xun, a famous literary figure in modern Chinese literature.

He died on March 27, 1981 in Beijing. His masterpieces include "Midnight", "Spring Silkworms" and "Store of Lin Family", which vividly recorded social life in old China.
